Clarissa -

Clarissa wandered to the bench, looking around.

The rock was warm and the sun bright.

It was growing late. She looked over the valley, from one side to the other. The roadway had to be wiped out. The house needed clean access. This was her place, her property and their home… this was their home.

It didn't matter she owned the mansion and the property. That didn't feel like hers… the mansion and the property was her prison. Anytime she tried to get past the gate, an invisible fence held her. Nearing it she'd feel sick and then sicker and then couldn't pass. Not easily.

She'd been trapped since she was eighteen.

The only window on reality she'd had was the visit of the lawyers to check on her. Her grandfather had been a wise and kind man. He saw how she was treated but couldn't help then… she understood why. His provisions for after he'd died, with her parents predeceasing him, assured that she would be cared for more than Anton wanted.

The great incentive was this property. Nothing about those provisions could be changed. Only Clarissa's child could inherit and that was impossible. At her death, the property would go to a national trust, a heritage foundation that had more money than their lawyers could steal. And they coveted this estate. They had time.

They were patient, unlike Anton. With the historical connections of the mansion, the slave quarters and kitchen in nearly original condition along with the size of the estate, they would make certain they got their hands on it. So, since grandfather's will said they had to verify she was okay once a month, they did it. Anton wanted to put her in a mental hospital but that would automatically enforce the articles of the will.

Now… the three women were connected. The varied reasons they were together were becoming a single reason. Clarissa couldn't tell them what she'd endured. She couldn't tell them why she feared Anton or… even worse… Meredith's experiment.

The details of those experiments were too horrific to contemplate.

Simply considering them pulled a cloud over a sunny sky.

Now the ghost tells of this same experiment from two hundred years ago. What could be made of that? It had always been more than Meredith and Anton… her parents and cousins.

The neighboring manors…? Grandfather had warned her. Their pact was for her to fight them… to use their secrets against them. He'd told her what he knew, but it was worthless if she couldn't act on it. It was an empty plan… it had been… Now, with Linda… and Ellen… things were different.

Still, she couldn't rush it. She couldn't risk disclosure… failure was not an option, not with the seal on their pact. They needed knowledge. There was that issue Linda raised… history. And they needed facts on their enemies.

They all wanted safety, but Ellen needed it. Maybe they all needed.

Clarissa turned back to the shed.

The two were where she'd left them, still silent.

"Relax, speak freely," Clarissa said.

Neither woman moved.

She knelt, facing them.
